Breaking News: John Daly Would Rather Get Drunk Than Play Golf

Maybe one of the most shocking pieces of golf news to come out in years has rocked the PGA: John Daly, 300+lb. golfer and winner of two major championships, would rather get drunk than play golf.I know, I know. It’s tough to believe. But we have it straight from a reliable source: Butch Harmon. Harmon is Daly’s swing coach. Well, at least he was. He used to be. Recently, though, he quit. His reason? And I quote:

“My whole goal for him was he’s got to show me golf is the most important thing in his life,” Harmon said from his golf school in Las Vegas. “And the most important thing in his life is getting drunk.”

Clemens Is Questioned by Congressional Staff

WASHINGTON — Roger Clemens emerged from nearly five hours of questioning by congressional investigators Tuesday repeating his denials that he never used steroids or human growth hormone and thanking them for the chance to say so under oath.

“I just want to thank the committee, the staff that I just met with, they were very courteous,” Clemens told reporters in an impromptu 25-second statement after his closed-door deposition. “It was great to be able to tell them what I’ve been saying all along — that I’ve never used steroids or growth hormone. And I look forward to being here, I guess, in this room next week. So, thank you very much. Y’all have a good day.”

Biggio receives Clemente Award honor

DENVER — With 3,060 hits and 291 home runs, Craig Biggio will undoubtedly be remembered first for his offensive contributions during his 20-year Major League career. But it’s quite possible the veteran second baseman is as recognizable to those in his adopted home of Houston for his affiliation with the Sunshine Kids as he is for his on-field accomplishments.

O.J. Simpson’s Bail Is Set at $125,000

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A judge set bail Wednesday at $125,000 for O.J. Simpson in connection with the armed robbery of sports memorabilia collectors at a Las Vegas hotel. His attorney later said he expected the former football star to be released within hours and return to Florida.

Simpson, standing in court in a blue jail uniform and handcuffs, furrowed his brow as the judge read the list of charges against him.

He answered quietly in a hoarse voice and nodded as Justice of the Peace Joe Bonaventure Jr. laid out restrictions for his release, including surrendering his passport to his attorney and having no contact with co-defendants or potential witnesses.

Simpson did not enter a plea.

Unlike his arraignment over a decade ago in the 1994 killings of his ex-wife and her friend Ron Goldman, when Simpson declared he was “absolutely 100 percent not guilty,” he was subdued throughout the proceeding Wednesday.

Source: O.J. Simpson arrested in armed robbery probe

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) — Las Vegas police arrested O.J. Simpson on Sunday amid an investigation into an alleged armed robbery at a hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, a source close to the investigation said.
The charges he faces are unclear.

Simpson was arrested at his room in the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, the source said.

On Saturday, Las Vegas police arrested Walter Alexander and seized two guns in connection with the alleged armed robbery, the source said.

“I don’t know why they arrested him,” Simpson said Sunday. “I’ve stayed in contact with the police and the truth will come out.”

Simpson had already been questioned during the investigation into several items of sports memorabilia that were taken from collectors at a room in the Palace Station Hotel and Casino. Simpson has said the items belonged to him.

Bad News Begins With the Bullpen and Ends With Lo Duca’s Injury

The Florida Marlins came back to beat the Mets, 7-5, in dramatic fashion yesterday at Shea Stadium. For the Mets, that was not even the worst news of the night.

After the game, the Mets announced that catcher Paul Lo Duca would be placed on the disabled list. Lo Duca aggravated an injury to his right hamstring while running to first base in the fourth inning.

The Mets (64-52) are going through their most demoralizing stretch of the season. Their lead in the National League East was trimmed to two and a half games over the Atlanta Braves, who beat the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday, 7-5. Their lead has not been that slim since July 21, and they have lost four of their past five games, all of which have been played at home.

“I think it was the way it was supposed to be done,” Biggio said as he choked back tears. “To have it happen here — that was a special atmosphere that was out there today.”

Suns Outlast Mavs in Double OT Thriller

Forget March Madness. Phoenix and Dallas played a game that belonged in late May. Steve Nash played like an MVP down the stretch and Amare Stoudemire had 41 points and 10 rebounds, carrying the Suns to a 129-127 double-overtime victory over the Mavericks on Wednesday night in a tense, thrilling game between the NBA’s top teams.

“That was a playoff atmosphere,” Stoudemire said. “Both teams played with high intensity. Both teams were in it until the end.”

And when it was over, it was obvious the Western Conference and MVP races were still too close to call.

Georgetown Crushes Pitt to Win Big East

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr.
AP Sports Writer
NEW YORK (AP) — John Thompson III heard his father yelling something at him from behind Georgetown’s bench. He couldn’t make out what he was saying, and it really didn’t matter. The Hoyas were about to become Big East champions. “Oh boy,” Thompson said with a smile. “That’s another thing off my to-do list I can scratch off.”

Roy Hibbert scored 14 of his 18 points in the ninth-ranked Hoyas’ big first half and Georgetown cruised past No. 13 Pittsburgh 65-42 Saturday night to win the Big East tournament for a record seventh time.
