Mirren’s Emmy Crack Draws FCC Complaint

WASHINGTON — The Parents Television Council called on federal regulators Thursday to fine NBC for “vulgar and obscene” comments by two actresses during Sunday’s broadcast of the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Walking up to the stage to accept a best actress Emmy for HBO’s “Elizabeth I,” Helen Mirren commented on her relief that she didn’t go “ass over tit” as she came up the stairs. A few minutes later, Calista Flockhart repeated the phrase before presenting another award.

The comments aired before 10 p.m. in the Central and Mountain time zones, when federal law prevents obscene language on over-the-air broadcasts.

Stefani Buys J.Lo’s Beverly Hills Digs

It’s her life, and singer Gwen Stefani wants to live it in Jennifer Lopez’s old home.

The No Doubt singer and her husband, Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, have bought a Beverly Hills house that once belonged to the “Gigli” star for almost $15.5 million, reports the Wall Street Journal.

There won’t be any residual J.Lo traces around though since the house actually first passed through the hands of film producer and businessman Sam Nazarian, who originally purchased the house from Lopez in 2004.

A career for the ages came to a close Sunday when Agassi lost to the 112th-ranked player in the world, with Benjamin Becker serving an ace to finish off a 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5 third-round victory at the U.S. Open.

Playing with the spirit of a champion but a creaky body that needed three injections, the end came with Agassi looking like what he’d become — a 36-year-old man with a bad back trying to play tennis.

What we have learned since 9/11 – Sep 3, 2006

By Nancy Gibbs

Editor’s note: The following is a summary of this week’s Time magazine cover story.

– An American businessman, traveling in India when the planes struck the towers, made his way back to the U.S. the following week as quickly as he could. That meant hopscotching across the Middle East, stopping in Athens, Greece, overnight to change planes.

He spent the evening taking supper in a local taverna. No one in the restaurant spoke English, but when the owner realized he had an American in the house just two nights after 9/11, he asked his guest to stand up, face the other diners and listen to a toast.

And indeed, the entire room stood up, raised their glasses and said, as one, “Shoulder to shoulder, until justice is done.”
