Woman in JFK Limo During Shootings Dies

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Nellie Connally, the former Texas first lady who was riding in President Kennedy’s limousine when he was assassinated, has died, a family friend said Saturday. The 87-year-old was the last living person who had been part of that fateful Dallas drive.

A Day of Google Traffic

I love working from my kitchen table where I can see the tide go in and out during the course of the day. Buried in a Google paper about data analysis using map/reduce was the modern-day equivalent: this hypnotic view of a day of Google traffic on a map. It’s intriguing how a lot of the world (Japan, East Coast US, some of Europe) never goes dark, even during night-time. Now, a real-time view of this would be a fantastic desktop background or wall image: an ambient display of the distribution of the world’s melatonin, shifting as the day progresses.

Hurricane John weakens to Category 1 – Sep 2, 2006

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane John weakened as it hit land but still lashed the main city in the southern part of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula with fierce winds and rain Saturday after sparing Los Cabos a direct hit.

John was a Category 2 storm with 160 kph (100 mph) winds when it struck land near isolated hamlets northeast of Los Cabos Friday night, but it had slipped to Category 1 status with winds near 150 kph (85 mph) Saturday morning.

Are You Ready? Microsoft Launches First Windows Vista Release Candidate

Today, Microsoft released the RC1 (Release Candidate 1) version of its next generation OS Windows Vista. The term release candidate refers to a final product, ready to release unless fatal bugs emerge. In this stage, the product features all designed functionalities and no known showstopper class bugs. At this phase the product is usually code complete.

The Release Candidate 1 was announced by Jim Allchin, Windows client vice president, in a-email addressed to TechNet subscribers.

Tom Glavine Pleased With First Outing

Tom Glavine was just happy to get back on the mound. Glavine pitched for the first time in a few weeks after being sidelined by a blood clot in his pitching shoulder. He didn’t get the win as New York beat Houston 8-7 Friday night, but he was pleased with the outing. “Right now my goals are simple, I just want to feel good and come out of the game feeling good and that happened tonight so that’s good,” said Glavine, who remained at 287 career wins.
