Hurricane alert issued for east coast

MIAMI (Reuters) – The threat Tropical Storm Ernesto posed to Florida diminished on Tuesday as it failed to gain strength over warm waters, but forecasters issued new hurricane alerts for the U.S. east coast later in the week.

Ernesto, the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season’s fifth storm, could regain hurricane strength after it emerges off northeast Florida and curves back into land between Georgia and North Carolina, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Fugitive polygamist sect leader caught near Las Vegas – Aug 29, 2006

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) — Nevada state troopers found one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives, along with wigs, cell phones, laptop computers and about $50,000 in cash, on a highway north of Las Vegas, authorities said Monday.

Polygamist sect leader Warren Steed Jeffs, 50, was a passenger in a red 2007 Cadillac Escalade that was pulled over along Interstate 15 shortly after 9 p.m. (7 p.m. ET) Monday.

Ahmadinejad challenges U.N., Bush

TEHRAN — President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad today challenged the authority of the U.N. Security Council as Iran faces a deadline to halt its uranium enrichment, and he called for a televised debate with President Bush on world issues.
The Security Council has given Iran until Thursday to suspend enrichment, a process that can produce fuel for a reactor or material for weapons, or face economic and political sanctions.

U.S. Open Goes to the Video Tape

NEW YORK (AP) — Andy Roddick walked toward the chair umpire, shaking his head and waving his arms. “Challenge it, Andy!” shouted a man high up in the stands at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Instant replay made its debut at Grand Slam tennis Monday and two points from an overwhelming win at the U.S. Open, Roddick wanted to test the system.

Bonds’ Personal Trainer Back in Jail

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An angry judge sent Barry Bonds’ personal trainer back to jail Monday for refusing to talk about the Giants slugger, as well as New York Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield.

Greg Anderson, found in contempt of court for refusing to testify, could remain behind bars for more than a year while a federal grand jury investigates Bonds for perjury and tax evasion.

U.S. Open Begins Today in New York

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Open tennis begins today in New York, weather permitting. Andre Agassi, 36, has announced that this will be his final event.

Other past Open champions slated to appear on Day 1 included Andy Roddick (2003), Justine Henin-Hardenne (2003), Svetlana Kuznetsova (2004) and Lindsay Davenport (1998), who was hoping to be able to play despite hurting her right shoulder Saturday.

‘Invincible’ Tackles ‘Beerfest,’ ‘Idlewild’ For Box-Office #1

A group of beer-swilling competitors and a pair of rappers tried their best to rule the box office this weekend, but an NFL hopeful proved “Invincible” when it came to ticket sales.

The top spot on the box-office top 10 belonged to the football film “Invincible,” which earned more than $17 million its first weekend in theaters, according to early estimates. Starring Mark Wahlberg and based on a true story, the movie centers on Vince Papale — a substitute teacher, part-time bartender and wannabe NFL player who showed up at open tryouts for the Philadelphia Eagles and made the team (see “Mark Wahlberg Can Make Hits, But Can He Take Them? Emmys Clock into “24,” “Office”

The 58th Annual Emmy Awards marked a very good night for counterterrorism agents on a tight schedule, virginal British monarchs and slackers with bad karma. Freakishly attractive medical types, on the other hand, did not fare as well.

Fox’s 24 clocked in with three Emmys Sunday, including Outstanding Drama Series and Lead Actor, Drama for Kiefer Sutherland.

Woods and Cink Battle in Sudden Death

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Tiger Woods and Stewart Cink made par on the first three holes of their sudden death playoff at the Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday, and headed to No. 17 for their fourth in a downpour.

Woods and Cink finished regulation play tied at 10-under 270 for the tournament.

Jim Furyk finished one shot back at 9 under.
