Clerks II – Review – Movies

By A. O. SCOTT
Published: July 21, 2006

The 1990’s, you may recall, were a golden age of cheaply made movies about white guys in their 20’s sitting around doing nothing. This is not a genre that has spawned very many sequels. The white guys who made those movies either faded away, went on to bigger things or kept making variations on the same picture again and again.

AMD said near $5.5 bln deal to buy ATI

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) – Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD.N), the No. 2 supplier of computer processors, is close to a deal to buy graphics chip maker ATI Technologies Inc. (ATYT.O) (ATY.TO) for $5.5 billion, a source familiar with the situation said on Friday.

Such a deal would shake up the processor industry, which is witnessing a tooth-and-nail fight for market share between AMD and larger rival Intel Corp. (INTC.O). AMD would gain one of two major graphics chips makers, the other being Nvidia Corp.

Q&A with writer/director Kevin Smith – baltimoresun.com

By Patrick Storck

It’s been more than a decade since writer/director Kevin Smith introduced his characters Dante and Randal. On the eve of the cult heroes’ return to service industry hell, Smith participated in a brief roundtable discussion in Washington, D.C., about the long-awaited sequel, Clerks II.

During the discussion, Smith admitted to being somewhat hesitant to revisit such beloved characters, afraid to ruin what he had established. Before starting production on the sequel, Smith watched the original and his fears subsided as he saw that the themes and characters remained consistent. He was surprised to find that his cast still held reservations, most specifically Jeff Anderson (Randal), who nearly drove past the exit for the set on the second day of shooting, afraid the film was a bad idea. A day later, Smith showed the cast and crew some cut scenes of what they’d been shooting, and everyone, including Anderson, was on board.

Microsoft Sucks Up Sysinternals

It’s hard to know how to feel about Microsoft’s purchase, announced today, of Sysinternals, one of the best sites around for free Windows utilities, and Winternals, its sister site that produces paid enterprise recovery, security and defragging tools.

While Sysinternals tools — such as Process Explorer, Regmon and DiskMon — are wonderfully useful, you have to feel that this deal is more about Redmond acquiring two more big brains: the sites’ co-founders, Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell. Russinovich will be one of Microsoft’s technology fellows and Cogswell a software architect.

Mets Hit 2 Slams in Inning, Rout Cubs

By RICK GANO
AP Sports Writer

CHICAGO (AP) — Cliff Floyd and Carlos Beltran hit grand slams, and David Wright added a two-run shot in a team-record 11-run sixth inning as the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 13-7 Sunday night.

New York sent 16 batters to the plate in the sixth and benefited from two errors on second baseman Todd Walker that led to eight of the 11 runs being unearned. The half-inning, on a muggy 95-degree night at Wrigley Field, took 41 minutes to play and saw the Cubs make 70 pitches.
